Parenting Style – Pattern Of Parental Behavior

The life of a parent undergoes a dramatic change with the birth of a child and it requires that he or she need to make certain decisions like choosing between bottle or breast, carriage or stroller, continuing work or staying home, employing a nanny or opting for day care.

With children growing up, these decisions continue to change and parents need to decide on the school the child must attend, their meals, allowances, after-school activities and more. All these decisions are dependent on the parenting style and attitude which will influence how the child is taught and learns to socialize.

A Complicated Matter with No Easy Answers

Parenting is a complicated matter with no easy answers available, and many different interactions concerning certain actions and attitudes on the part of parents need to be put together which will affect the development of the child. Such a broad overall pattern of parental actions are termed as a parenting style; not a single act.

Parenting styles may differ and they were best described by Diana Baumrind as well as other researchers in child development. They sought out qualities in children that were most desirable such as innocence, maturity, independence, self-reliance, curiosity, self-control, friendliness as well as achievement orientation and they further quizzed parents to ascertain which elements of parenting nurtured such qualities, and then came up with two factors, which are responsiveness or warmth as well as supportiveness, and demandingness or control of the child’s behavior.

The four major parenting styles they found were authoritarian, authoritative, permissive and uninvolved. After further research, they came to conclude that the best adjusted children, especially when it came to social competence, were children of parents that belonged to an authoritative, moderate parenting style. Such parents were able to balance high demands with emotional responsiveness as well as respect for the autonomy of their children.

In contrast, parents that are too strict expect their children to accept parental judgments without argument and do not allow much freedom to the child. Children under such parenting style influences will be reliant on authority and will not be able to show much spontaneity. Authoritative parents, in sharp contrast, allow their children freedom of expression and encourage a sense of independence in their children.

Parenting style can influence the child and it has been found that children of authoritarian mothers were five times more likely to be overweight as compared to authoritative mothers, while children of permissive or uninvolved parents were three times more at risk.

What type of jobs can you get in child development or learning about children with mental issues?

I would like to learn more about the development of the human brain and I"m not sure what type of career path to take. I thought about psychology but thats too much schooling. I am 22, full time job and I own a home, so a part time job is out of the question. I’ve been looking into the local community colleges. Any ideas on what type of career you can learning about the development of humans/children and/or mentally retarded people?

I’m afraid the main choice is psychology. Then you can specify child psychology or become an educational psychologist. You can get carework with children, or work in Special Needs in schools, but neither is well paid and as I said the main qualification that improves your prospects would be psychology. It may be "too much schooling" but it’s an important and challenging career.

Why are mothers, or parents in general, so impatient when it comes to child development?

Just curious. I’m not trying to be offensive with my question at all, I’m just wondering why, especially mothers in particular, are impatient with a child’s development. It’s sort of aggravating how everything comes down to who can do what first. Then, when the child DOES reach that stage, the parent/mother complain’s about how their child is growing up too fast and how they wish they were little again. I know, I’ve done this myself, but I thought it would be an interesting question to ask and get opinons on. :)

Milestones are new, and they’re fun. Hoping to myself "I can’t wait for her to be able to hug me" isn’t at all about competition. For me anyway. I was in no rush to pottie train anybody, or move off the bottle; I waited until they were ready – - whenever that was. And to wait for their green light, they nail it a week. If that causes them to achieve it later than others, so be it. They all catch up. I never saw a highschooler with a bottle.

I always found that to push a child to achieve something ahead of schedule accomplishes nothing but secure bragging rights. Okay. I get that. It’s just not high up on my list.

Best advice I ever got was to cherish the Terrible 2s because someday they’ll be teenagers and you’ll know then how easy 2 was!

Why are schools teaching sex education but not about child development from conception?

http://www.ehd.org/

What is wrong with children learning about what science has revealed to be truth? Why would you want to keep the time line of child development away from children? What is the purpose? Is the act of one the cause of another?

vkira02, does that mean they should stop teaching sex education?

Some people assume that if you educate a child about something they will become that way or become corrupt. There was a big thing about teaching drugs in school. Parents assumed if kids learned about the effects of drugs they will go out and do them. It could be the same thing. If they are taught about child development they could go out and have babies. Not very logical, but ive met some people who think that way.
