What do you say when your child asks for a baby brother or sister?

We are first time older parents (thank you, thank you) My wife and I have decided to leave the discussion about a second child for at least 12 months.

We are currently leaning towards our son being an only child. I have every confidence he will be raised right and not miss out.

This is for people who have decided to have one child.

What do you say when your kid asks "Can I have a little brother or sister?" I am interested to hear from those who were asked and how they handled it, knowing their kid was going to be an only child?

I have one son who is 5 and he is constantly saying how he wants a little brother and is always watching commercials that have baby toys in them. He always tells me how he wants to get it for his little brother, my husband and i have been trying to conceive for two years and we miscarried a couple of months ago. After that we decided not to have another child but it is started to get to me when he talks like that. At times I do feel like he misses out on having a little companion and at other times I feel like he is getting all of our attention. It would be hard for us to do the same with a second child, I think. good luck…

Could a non-delayed child benefit from Early Intervention class?

My son is ready for pre-school. There is an Early Intervention program in my town. They welcome both kids with developmental delays and those without. Those without serve as role models for the delayed kids. I think this would be a great way to teach my son to accept differences, and hopefully get a great early education for less $. My main concern is that my child, in turn, might NOT develop as well because of the other kids. Does anyone have experience with this? Thanks.
Important detail: While he has not been labeled "gifted", the Pediatrician has said his cognitive development is advanced for his age.

I would say go for it. I think that there is more positives then there are negatives. You listed the positives of him learning acceptances and it being cheaper.

The only negatives he may find the class not challenging enough. I wouldn’t even say that for sure though. if the preschool is welcoming all kids they will be adapted to all kids of all development stages. Even if the class is some what repetitive have to keep it in perspective, it is preschool if he hears the ABC’s one to many times and they don’t go over the color red enough, I am sure he will figure it out by grade one!!!

Preschool is more about ‘growing up’ the social skills and learning to interact with other kids, parents and teachers. It gets them in t the routine of school and being starting to be away from Mom (that is for both you!). The education part of preschool is really not preschools primary goal.

Good Luck!

How does child support work, how long does it take? What is the average monthly pay for 1 child?

I have a 2yr old son with my Ex, We split on August 2007 I open a child support case that same month. I sent all my paperwork & i gave them all his information including his work address & num, Its been 3months already & i havent received anything. I asked my ex if he received any letters & he said no.

The best way to get child support is thru your local Child Support Enforecement office. You may not be able to force your ex to visit his child, but you can MAKE him support him/her. child Support Enforcement will automatically garnish his paycheck and send you the money via mail or a check card. They will also assist you with establishing paternity if this has not been done yet. Click the following link to locate your local office:http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/cse/extinf.html

Depending on the state you live in, the process should take anywhere from 6weeks to 6months. Support is determined on both of your incomes and it may also require that he maintain health insurance for your child.

Since you have already begun the process, contact your case worker to inquire about the status.

Good luck!

Can I major in Music and Early child hood education??

what can I do with both? can I major in both? Can I be a Music teacher? do they pay good?

Yes you can do both, but if you’re planning on working in Ohio I would do neither. I majored in Early Childhood and Early Intervention Specialist… thank goodness I had the SPED otherwise I would not have a job near home right now. I actually work as a teacher in the regular classroom, but I have the at-risk students and students on IEP’s. They both pay the same, it’s based on education and years of experience. Since I double majored, my salary started at step 0 bachelor’s +20 (20 credits hours over 150). This increased my beginning base buy by $1500/ year. Follow your heart and passion though, I had many tell me not to be a teacher because they don’t make a lot of money. So I don’t have a lot of money, but I completely love being a teacher! Good luck!

Handling the parent of a child with behavior issues?

I have a child who does not follow directions, does not listen, constantly out of his seat, constantly argues with others, will not admit when he has been caught RED HANDED (still shakes his head and says it wasn’t him even though I saw him!!!), and constantly on another PLANET!!! The issue I have; THE PARENT, She always questions me!!!!! The son is NEVER at fault!!! HELP!!!!!!! Quite franky as professional as teachers have to be, I AM TIRED OF IT.

I know the feeling. Make sure you’re documenting everything this kid does/says and write the date each time you spoke to the parent and what the situation and response were. If you have a school therapist/counselor ask them if they can sit in and observe the student so that you have another adult witness to the behavior. Schedule a conference and have the principal or ap sit in. This usually shakes the parent up a bit. Also if the behavior begins to affect the academic grades sometimes the parent wakes up and gets a clue. Good luck!
